As you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. For the past seven years, Advanced Skin Care has raised money for breast cancer charities with our Annual October Pink event. This year is no exception but this year it will be done virtually. We will be donating to the WellStar Breast Center. WellStar has the first breast center in Georgia to be granted a full three-year accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). WellStar offers a comprehensive spectrum of top-notch physicians, treatment options, and diagnostic tools. In addition, it offers a wealth of supportive services to help patients and their families throughout this treatment journey, from counseling services to exercise and nutritional help.
Here are some U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics from the American Cancer Society:
- About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.
- For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
- A woman’s risk of breast cancer nearly doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
- About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations
About 207,000 cases will be diagnosed this year, according to estimates from the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer is highly curable in early stages, with about a 95 percent five-year survival rate of early disease.
WellStar physicians strongly encourage yearly mammograms after age 40 for women considered at average risk. Those women who have a mother or sister with the disease should talk to their doctors about earlier screening or genetic testing.
